SGP.32 eSIM Platforms Increase Fivefold as IoT Adoption Accelerates in 2026
New figures from the Trusted Connectivity Alliance show a fivefold increase in SGP.32-compatible eSIM subscription management platforms during the first half of 2026, alongside a sharp rise in consumer eSIM adoption and continued growth in traditional SIM shipments.
For IoT device manufacturers deploying connected products across multiple countries, remotely managing cellular subscriptions remains a critical operational challenge. Changing connectivity providers, activating devices after deployment or managing operator profiles across large fleets can introduce complexity and costs that extend well beyond the initial hardware installation.
The industry’s transition to the GSMA SGP.32 specification is intended to address these limitations. New market data from the Trusted Connectivity Alliance (TCA) suggests that the infrastructure supporting this transition is expanding rapidly.
According to TCA’s October 2026 market snapshot, the global number of eSIM Subscription Manager (SM) platforms supporting profile downloads under SGP.32 increased fivefold in the first half of 2026 compared with the full-year 2025 figure.
SGP.32 Infrastructure Expands as IoT Providers Prepare for Scale
The fivefold increase is particularly significant because it measures the expansion of subscription management infrastructure rather than simply the number of eSIM-enabled devices entering the market.
SGP.32 introduces a remote SIM provisioning architecture specifically designed for IoT devices, where conventional consumer-oriented provisioning mechanisms are not always practical. The specification is intended to simplify remote subscription management across connected devices operating with different levels of connectivity, processing capabilities and user interaction.
For OEMs and enterprises, the growing availability of compatible platforms could expand their options for managing cellular connectivity throughout a device’s operational lifetime. This is relevant to applications such as industrial monitoring, asset tracking, connected vehicles and smart infrastructure, where devices may remain deployed for years without convenient physical access.
However, the distinction between platform availability and actual deployment adoption is important. A fivefold increase in compatible subscription management platforms does not necessarily translate into equivalent growth in connected devices using SGP.32. The TCA announcement does not disclose the absolute number of compatible platforms or the number of IoT devices actively provisioned through them.
Nevertheless, the figures point to growing investment in the infrastructure needed to support wider adoption of the standard.
What the Shift Means for IoT Connectivity Providers
For connectivity providers and system integrators, the expansion of SGP.32-compatible infrastructure changes the practical considerations surrounding eSIM deployment.
As additional subscription management platforms become available, enterprises evaluating connectivity solutions have more reason to examine interoperability, remote provisioning capabilities and long-term subscription management alongside traditional criteria such as network coverage and pricing.
The development also highlights an important architectural consideration: adopting an eSIM standard does not automatically eliminate integration complexity. Device compatibility, platform implementation and operational processes must still work together to deliver reliable remote connectivity management.
Consequently, the growth reported by TCA should be viewed as progress in ecosystem readiness rather than evidence that the operational challenges of large-scale eSIM deployment have been fully resolved.
Consumer eSIM Adoption Accelerates, Led by China
Beyond IoT, TCA’s latest figures show a sharp acceleration in consumer eSIM adoption. Worldwide consumer eSIM profile downloads during the first six months of 2026 reached almost the same volume recorded throughout the whole of 2025.
China was a major contributor to this increase, following regulatory approval for leading domestic operators to offer eSIM services in October 2025. The subsequent introduction of eSIM-enabled devices and the availability of travel eSIM plans helped drive adoption.
Growth also continued across North America and Europe, as well as emerging markets in the Middle East, Africa and South America.
The acceleration builds on an already expanding market. TCA previously estimated that global eSIM shipments reached 605 million units in 2025, an 18% increase year-on-year, while consumer eSIM profile downloads rose 43%.
Despite this momentum, the association cautions that challenges affecting near-term smartphone shipments could constrain consumer eSIM demand over the coming year.
Traditional SIM Demand Remains Strong
One notable finding is that rapid eSIM adoption has not resulted in a decline in traditional SIM demand.
TCA members reported a 6% year-on-year increase in delivered traditional SIM volumes during the first half of 2026, continuing the growth recorded in 2025.
This coexistence reflects the different requirements of the broader connectivity market. While eSIM offers remote subscription management capabilities, traditional SIM solutions remain relevant across numerous applications and deployment environments.
For the IoT industry, the findings reinforce the importance of selecting connectivity technology according to operational requirements rather than assuming a uniform transition toward eSIM.
The TCA, whose members are estimated to represent approximately 85% of the global eSIM hardware market, bases its monitoring on member shipment, transaction and platform data.
The central takeaway for IoT stakeholders is the acceleration of SGP.32 ecosystem development. With more subscription management infrastructure becoming available, the industry is addressing an important prerequisite for scalable remote connectivity management. The next measure of progress will be how effectively this expanding infrastructure translates into interoperable, commercially deployed IoT solutions.
